Miya Akiyama

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Masters of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy

As a therapist, I am most interested in people’s stories about their lives. Inspired by the words of Thomas King, I believe that “The truth about stories is that’s all that we are.” In therapy, we get to reflect on the stories we tell ourselves, consider whether we are happy with these narratives, and figure out ways to represent ourselves in the world around us authentically. With a focus in Marriage and Family Therapy, I have been trained to approach problems with a systemic perspective. Whether looking at individual problems or relational issues, it is essential to consider how problems connect to our extended systems. Reflecting on personal histories, our communities, societal practices, and more, we can begin to discern the influences we keep and those we let go of. Recognizing that we are all unique and carry individual lived experiences, I see the client as having expert knowledge about their lives. Working together, I aim to support you in reflecting on your personal stories with the goal of reauthoring these narratives in a preferred and chosen way.
