Therapeutic Approach & Specialties
Mikaela’s clinical experience spans the lifespan, from pediatric to middle-aged populations, though her primary focus is on pediatric psychology. Mikaela particularly enjoys working with children under the age of ten, with a major focus on early childhood (as young as age 2). Her areas of clinical focus include Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, trauma, attachment, FASD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), academic and intellectual disabilities, and pediatric mood disorders.
In addition to her work with children, Mikaela has a growing clinical interest in grief, palliative, and end-of-life care, as well as couples and family therapy, with a particular focus on how loss, transition, and relational stressors impact emotional well-being and relationships across the lifespan. She is interested in supporting individuals, couples, and families navigating anticipatory grief, bereavement, and relational change, and in providing compassionate, meaning-centered care during periods of significant life transition.
Mikaela’s therapeutic approach is integrative, drawing primarily from attachment-based, trauma-informed, and humanistic/existential frameworks. Within her child therapy practice, she incorporates play-based and sand tray/art therapy to facilitate emotional expression, symbolic processing, and relational connection in developmentally appropriate ways. Across child, family, and adult work, she values creating a collaborative and compassionate therapeutic relationship that supports emotional awareness, authenticity, and resilience. Her assessment practice emphasizes understanding individuals within their broader developmental, familial, and environmental contexts, integrating standardized testing with clinical observation and caregiver collaboration. She also has a particular interest in parenting and caregiving assessments and in Collaborative Therapeutic Assessment (CTA), a collaborative assessment approach that actively involves clients and caregivers in the assessment process to promote insight, shared understanding, and meaningful therapeutic change.
At Nuvista, Mikaela will also be offering attachment-based parent and caregiver programming through the Circle of Security intervention, as well as parent/caregiver and adult assessments, couples and family therapy, and equine-assisted therapy. She values an interdisciplinary approach to clinical care and aims to integrate collaboration across specialties to support holistic client well-being. Mikaela is passionate about promoting emotional well-being and secure attachment relationships in children, individuals, and families through accessible, evidence-based, and relationship-centered care.
